Everyday you are faced with a series of choices to make. These questions may range from the simplest things like 'Should I go to the grocery store today?" to more important things like "Is this person a healthy addition to my life?" We have to make choice after choice and sometimes it can just get simply overwhelming.
The single most important thing however, in the midst of all these choices, is being able to drown out the noise of this world and actively position yourself to quiet down, listen and obey the voice of God.
"And all these blessings shall come upon you and overtake you, if you obey the voice of the LORD your God." Duet. 28:2
When you set aside time daily to pray and align yourself with God, His voice not only becomes clearer resulting in you making better decisions, His blessings will also completely overtake you when you obey Him.
If the voice of God is not leading you, you may find it difficult to make sound decisions in an effective and timely manner. The first thing that God created in Genesis 1 was light. God's Kingdom, is a kingdom of light. It is not in His nature to hide anything from you and keep you in the dark concerning your purpose. God has given us His light, to lead us, guide us and give us total clarity and total peace as we maneuver throughout our day to day activities.
"Your word is a lamp unto my feet, a light unto my path." Psalm 119:105
The Word of God is a lamp unto our feet. If we don't have His Word, we cannot see. We cannot discern His voice from another. Moreover, man cannot live off bread alone, but off every word that proceeds from the mouth of God. (Matt. 4:4)
For instance, when you woke up this morning, did you dash out of the house and neglect to spend time with God? I have noticed when I would do this in the past, my day would be more stressful and overwhelming than necessary. Spending time with God daily is for your own benefit. As of recently, I have been getting up at 6 am to pray and read the Word. It is crucial for me to set aside this time with my Father. It's a time for God to speak to me, for me to speak to Him, for me to worship Him, to intercede and pray for others and for the Holy Spirit to counsel me and prepare me for the day. When you wake up every morning and make an effort to seek God, your daily decision making process will become a lot easier.
Consider the life of Jesus. Everywhere He went, His mind was made up. His ability to make sound decisions was never a problem. Why? Well number one is because He already knew all things that would happen. However, additionally, it was because He was devoted to setting aside time daily to spend with His Father.
"Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed." Mark 1:35
Let's pause. Ask yourself these basic questions. Be honest with yourself and consider where you can make the necessary adjustments.
1.) Am I hasty to make decisions?
2.) Do I consult God about the choices I have to make on a daily basis?
2.) What does my prayer life look like? Do I pray on a consistent basis?
3.) When I say 'yes'/ 'no' do I stand on it?
4.) Do I read the Bible, which is a lamp unto my feet? Am I diligent in studying God's Word?
And he said: "Truly I tell you, unless you turn and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 18:3
Consider when you were a little child. When you wanted something, you had to ask your parents first. You had to get their permission. If you were an obedient child, you never did things on your own. It's the same with God. He is our Father. We should be seeking His approval when it comes to every decision we make in life. Then whatever answer we get we can then move forward and walk in His "yes".
Moreover, let your yes be yes and no be no. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways. If you agree to do something, stand on it. If you say no, keep that door shut and don't compromise.
As of recently, I had to make one of the hardest decisions in my life - to stay in Hollywood and continue my career as an actor, or step down, release my agent and focus on ministry. God had been tugging on my heart for a year about this. Could I do both? Yes. Will I ever go back to the entertainment industry? If God permits, perhaps. However, all I know is what God has called me to focus on in this particular season. And I am satisfied with that.
So today, make sound decisions, be clear about you intentions and meditate on Proverbs 3:5, "Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding." If God tells you to shut something down, do it and if He gives you the green light, run with it.
God, your Word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my way. Lavish your wisdom upon me and order my steps. I repent for the times I leaned on my own understanding and did not put my total trust in You. I cast my cares upon You and give You all of my fears, all of my anxieties, and all of my worries. Lord, Your yoke is easy and your burden is light. Lord, your mercy begins afresh each morning. Help me make wise and sound decisions from this day forward. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
